Stridsvagn (Strv) 104 – Centurion
While waiting for a new Swedish tank, refurbishment of the old Centurions started. They were equipped with a new sight and an improved fire control system. These tanks were designated Strv 101 R and Strv 102 R. On 80 of them more extensive work was done, where the old petrol engine was replaced by an air cooled diesel engine and the manual gearbox by a semi-automatic gearbox; these tanks were designated Strv 104.
They received the same engine and gearbox as the American M~60, a concept used on Israeli Centurions in the 1970's.
Strv 104 was well liked; the new gearbox made it very easy to drive compared to its predecessor, and top speed increased to 30 mph (from 22 mph). These 80 tanks were first used in Kristianstad (P 6), then for two years in Strangnas (P 10) and finally, until the end of its service, on Gotland (P 18). Strv 104 retired in 2001.
